For years, we told ourselves that "someday" we would buy a camper to travel with our boys. Time slipped by, and that someday didn't arrive until after they had already graduated high school. Realizing we didn't want to miss that same opportunity with our three grandchildren, we finally took the leap in November 2019 and purchased our first travel trailer. Now, from March through November, we make it a priority to enjoy one long weekend away every month in our 27-foot trailer.
While we are newer to the trailer life, my family’s roots in it go back decades. I recently discovered the Family RV Association (FRVA) and was honored to be assigned my grandparents' original membership number from when they joined in the 1960s. Carrying on their legacy today is one of my favorite parts of this journey.
The "Cruiser’s Secret" & Travel Protection
Many travelers don't realize that an FRVA membership is a gold mine for emergency protection on land and at sea. I recommend a simple, two-layer approach to stay covered:
Layer 1: The Essential Safety Net (FRVA Pathfinder) For just $99/year, you get up to $500,000 in medical evacuation coverage whenever you are 75+ miles from home—whether you're in a camper or on a cruise ship. This membership also unlocks a variety of other travel-related benefits and member discounts to support your life on the road.
Layer 2: The Financial Shield (Allianz Annual Policy) This handles the logistics like trip interruptions and baggage loss. I use an annual policy myself because it covers everyone residing in my home full-time—including my husband and our adult children—ensuring every "Highway or Harbor" adventure is protected year-round.
